Dear Linda,
Last week I experienced Mustard Seed Communities as I never have before. I participated in a week long mission trip to Kingston, Jamaica with a group of teens and adults. I witnessed the mission team bring the love of the world to the children of Mustard Seed and the children deliver the love of the Christ to the mission team.
As soon as our bus pulled in to Sophie’s Place the children who are mobile came to the edge of the yard to greet us. The first time you meet the children at Sophie’s Place can be overwhelming. The children, who can, rush towards you to give you big hugs. Those who can’t, look on from their wheelchairs waiting for you to approach them with the same level of enthusiasm and with excitement at the prospect of people who might play, laugh and sing with them. Many of the children have limbs that are thin and twisted – something most teens and adults in the U.S. have never seen before. I expected our group to be unsure around the children upon first meeting them – I was wrong.
Within ten minutes our group was fully engaged with the children. Footballs (American) and soccer balls were being thrown and kicked about; kids were receiving rides in their wheelchairs; smiles and laughter could be seen and heard through out the yard. As one of the teens shared later in the trip, “I determined right away that I would talk to and play with the kids as I would with friends at home.”
The week was not all fun and games played with the children. Monday and Tuesday were spent in the (very) hot sun mixing and laying concrete without the use of mechanical tools. The group used pick axes to loosen the damaged concrete that was to be replaced; loaded wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow of gravel and rock; mixed the rock with cement and water using shovels; loaded more wheelbarrows with the concrete and poured it onto the driveway.
After long days of manual labor, the children at Sophie’s would be waiting for our return. The group, many of whom were exhausted, and all of whom were filthy, left their desire for a shower and meal behind in order to play with the children.
I experienced many invaluable things while on this mission trip. The strongest being the unconditional love that the children of Mustard Seed have for each one of us. Every child at Mustard Seed greets you with smiles and hugs – lots of hugs! They love you first, last and always – as you are. I am grateful for my mission experience and grateful for Mustard Seed’s children who are filled with love, joy and grace.
Thank you for letting me share this experience with you,

other locations, continue to check our Latest News!
Dear Linda,
As a friend of Mustard Seed, you know that the safety and wellbeing of our children, staff and volunteers is our utmost priority.
Following a tragic 2008 hurricane season in Jamaica when Sophie’s Place in Gordon Town was hit particularly hard Mustard Seed is focused on hurricane readiness. It is our hope that we can learn from the lessons of 2008, ensuring that our apostolates do not suffer such losses again.
With the children’s safety and comfort being our first priority, we appeal to you now to help us continue to prepare for the hurricane season in Jamaica that officially began on June 1 and will run through the end of November. Experts are pre
dicting a “busier-than-usual” season this year, make this priority paramount.
Sophie’s Place has been repaired and is now protected by a retaining wall, to ensure that the river will no longer be the threat it was in 2008. Additionally, we have worked hard to make sure all of the buildings housing children are both built and repaired with care and methods that ensure safety. However, Jerusalem!, our apostolate in Spanish Town is in desperate need of roof repairs. We need to shore up this location and fortify the buildings there. Several buildings, including the bakery, which fuels our sustainability, the children’s hom
e and the historic chapel, are in desperate need of roof repairs.
Mustard Seed looks to you, our loyal volunteers and generous supporters, as we seek to raise $26,000 for these repairs.
Will you make a gift today to help us as Mustard Seed prepares its community in Jamaica for the upcoming hurricane season?
DONATE NOW TO KEEP OUR CHILDREN SAFE
With hurricane season underway, we ask that you pray that it is uneventful. Please keep Mustard Seed Communities and all affected in your prayers.

Dear Ms McLaughlin, Last night a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake devastated central Chile. As a result, the potential for a major tsunami is also feared in the region and across the Pacific. While the full extent of the damage is unknown, an estimated 500,000 people have been affected. Extraordinary generosity from Canadians has helped make a huge difference in providing immediate assistance to quake survivors in Haiti—and now the children and families of Chile need your urgent help. |

No child should ever have to have this look of utter horror. The measure of a society is how we care for our most vulnerable citizens. ~ABP~
Dear Ms McLaughlin,
As I try to move through the debris-filled streets of Port-au-Prince, I'm horrified to see that so many children are on their own, frightened and hungry, unable to find their parents. So much work needs to be done for these children—please help If you have already given, I thank you so much. Supplies are arriving and are being distributed at this very moment. But with the enormous scale of the devastation, the emergency work is heartbreakingly slow. Communication is sporadic, and trucks carrying supplies must try to pass through blocked roads. There are so many surviving children who need life-saving essentials, like medical care and shelter. Please help. (AP) There are so many children and families who are still in desperate circumstances. Everything they had—beds, clothes, food—lies smashed under the rubble. With every passing day, their need for clean water, food and shelter grows more urgent in the searing heat. The risk of diseases like cholera increases. Your donation right now will help save these children's lives by providing Emergency Kits to keep them well: $110 to supply 2 desperate families with Emergency Kits $220 so 4 Emergency Kits will go to 4 families in need $550 means 10 Emergency Kits for 10 families It's critical that we keep distributing these Emergency Kits, which contain items like blankets, hygiene supplies, cooking sets and other essentials, to those who are most in need. And remember, when you donate to help these children and families by February 12th, your gift will double in impact due to a generous contribution from the Canadian Government. World Vision is here in Haiti for the long term—we're going to continue to help rebuild and restore the lives of those affected by this terrible earthquake. Thank you for helping. Please keep the people of Haiti in your thoughts and prayers.
P.S.:
Remember, when you give the Canadian Government will match your donation. Rush emergency kits to the children and families in Haiti who need them most.
Dave Toycen President, World Vision Canada
First of all, if you have already given to the emergency assistance efforts here in Haiti, thank you so much. Your gifts are already at work to help save lives. But the need is staggering and the situation is getting worse. I see heart-breaking scenes of devastation and need all around me. Children without parents. Parents with injured children. And virtually no way to make them safe or well.

![]() Those who survived the quake need help urgently—food, water, shelter and more. Please give now. (AP) | ||
One of our staff, Willard Metzger, was staying in Port-au-Prince when the earthquake hit. His hotel quickly became a makeshift hospital.
And I am so thankful to say that, when you donate to help affected children and families here by February 12th, your gift will double in impact due to a generous contribution from the Canadian Government.

| Ms McLaughlin, Haiti was struck yesterday by the worst earthquake in 200 years—magnitude 7.0—followed by powerful aftershocks. Magalie Boyer, a World Vision staff member in Port-au-Prince, said, "It felt as if a truck had hit a wall... there is extensive damage to the city." While the death toll is still unknown, thousands are believed to have lost their lives. As many as 3 million people have been affected. |

I am really wrestling with this. I went onto the mustard seed web site. They have items they need. When my coworker went to Honduras she had to put library books in her suitcases to establish a library there. The cost of shipping things to other countries is astronomical. Has anyone found a good soul to help us ship things to those in need at a reduced cost? Carla

Home for the disabled gets a boost
published: Friday | July 13, 2007
Noel Thompson, Freelance Writer
WESTERN BUREAU:
The Mustard Seed Communities operated Blessed Assurance Home for Children with Disabilities, in Moore Park, St. James, received a boost on Wednesday with the donation of a much-needed cheque for $100,000, as well as a 400-gallon water tank.
Edmund Bartlett, the Jamaica Labour Party Member of Parliament for East Central St. James, the constituency in which the children'shome falls, made the donations. He said specifically that the money was a contribution from the Bartlett family and was the first such donation to come from the Lisa Bartlett Healthcare Fund, set up in memory of his late daughter.
The fund was established 10 years ago, after Lisa's death from a rear type of cystic fibrosis. Her death followed a prolonged battle with the disease.
In memory of
"This is in memory of our only daughter, who was a model child. She fought for 23 courageous years. Despite her illness, she did very well in academics, locally and abroad, while constantly travelling to Miami for treatment," Bartlett said, as he handed over the cheque.
He said it was the hope of his family that the donation would help in some way to preserve some lives and commended the Mustard Seed Community and the Catholic Church for their insight in caring for needy and helpless children.
Roy Sanford, manager of Bles-sed Assurance, said Mustard Seed deemed it a privilege to have been considered the first recipient of the Lisa Bartlett Fund.
Blessed Assurance commenced operations in Moore Park in March this year, providing housing and health care for children with acute mental and physical disabilities.
There are currently 11 boys and girls being housed in eight cottages, with plans to increase the number to 60, when phase two of the project is completed.

Prince William opens Princess Diana memorial service

A MEMORIAL service led by Princes William and Harry marking the 10-year anniversary of the death of their mother, Diana, princess of Wales, got under way in London today with a reading by William, the future king.
Around 500 guests including senior royals, friends of Diana and politicians attended the ceremony, organised by the royal brothers and held at the Guards Chapel near Buckingham Palace in central London.
William, 25, read from Saint Paul's letter to the Ephesians in the Bible.
Members of the public were not invited, but hundreds of people gathered outside the chapel and cheered William and Harry as they arrived to greet guests.
Harry, 22, made a personal address during the event.
Those in attendance include Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles as well as Diana's two sisters and brother, Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his predecessor Tony Blair.
The wife of Prince Charles, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, pulled out of attending the service Sunday, saying she did not want to be a distraction.
Diana had described Camilla as the third person in her marriage because she and Charles conducted a lengthy affair.
Mohamed Al Fayed, father of Diana's boyfriend Dodi, who was also killed in the crash, was not invited, but his daughter Camilla did go.
