Thanks to you and other Darfur activists like you, since Wednesday, over 74,000 messages have been sent to Members of Congress urging adequate funding to protect the people of Darfur.

That's impressive!  But we must keep the pressure on all our elected leaders – including President Bush.  That's why we’re about to do something we’ve never done before.

President Bush is soon headed to his Texas ranch.  To keep the Darfur genocide on his mind even while he’s on vacation, we’re going to run a full-page advertisement in the Waco, Texas, newspaper (the closest big newspaper to President Bush’s Crawford ranch).

Now we are asking for your help to pay for the ad.  For a contribution of at least $50, you can sign on and have your name printed in the advertisement in the Waco Tribune-Herald.

But we can only fit the names of 1,000 citizens calling on President Bush to take stronger action in Darfur, so please make your contribution soon.

Click here to make a $50 donation and see what the ad will look like.

The situation in Darfur is critical with hundreds of thousands of innocent people dead millions of men, women and children displaced from their homes and many more at risk.

That is why we are calling on President Bush to:

Push for the deployment of a strong UN peacekeeping force to protect Darfur civilians.

Appoint a Special Envoy to coordinate the U.S. government's Darfur policy and to see that the Darfur Peace Agreement is faithfully implemented.

President Bush must act soon.  And we must show him how much Americans are committed to stopping the genocide in Darfur.

Click here to support our work and add your name to the advertisement with a $50 donation today.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

David Rubenstein

Dear ABP,

For more than three years, the government-sponsored genocide in Darfur has forced two-and-a-half million people to flee their homes and has taken the lives of over 400,000 men, women, and children.

While the international community successfully pushed for the signing of the Darfur Peace Agreement in May, not enough help has yet been provided to protect the innocent people of Darfur.

That is why we must intensify our campaign to press our political leaders to act decisively to stop this genocide.  Will you join us?

Click here to email Congress to urge adequate funding to protect the people of Darfur.

In Darfur, civilians face possible murder, beatings, and rape on a daily basis.  Families are stranded in refugee camps, often far from their villages and everything they have ever known.  For them, daily life means waiting anxiously for aid and hoping to avoid violence.

The African Union peacekeepers in Darfur are woefully underfunded and incapable of fully protecting Darfur’s victims.  But until world leaders put enough pressure on the UN to send its own large multinational peacekeeping force, those African Union peacekeepers will remain the only line of defense for the people of Darfur.

Congress must therefore act with the Bush Administration to provide sufficient funding to protect Darfur’s civilians and to keep the promises made by the Darfur Peace Agreement.

Click here to email Congress to urge adequate funding to protect the people of Darfur.

Thank you for your continued support, which offers the most realistic hope of ending this genocide.

Sincerely,

David Rubenstein

Dear ABP,

Click here today to make a critical contribution today!

I have some important news to report; we have reached our goal of one million postcards calling on President Bush to take stronger action on behalf of the suffering people of Darfur!

In a ceremony this morning at the U.S. Capitol, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) and Senator Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) became the 999,999th and one-millionth postcard signers!

That means we now have one million postcards to deliver to President Bush urging action in Darfur.  We reached this historic moment thanks to efforts by you - and hundreds of thousands of activists like you - and hundreds of organizations across the country.

While we've achieved this major milestone, the Darfur genocide is not yet over and so our work is not yet done.  To help truly make a difference, your support right now is crucial.

Click here to make a tax-deductible contribution today to help us continue our efforts on behalf of the people of Darfur.

Millions in Darfur have already been displaced from their homes, with little hope of returning.  They suffer in squalid refugee camps with little protection or hope for the future.

And hundreds of thousands have already died at the hands of a genocidal regime while every day more are killed.

President Bush has a critical role to play in stopping the Darfur genocide.  His involvement was key in getting a signed peace agreement - an important first step.

But to truly stop the genocide in Darfur we must:

  • Deploy a UN peacekeeping force; and
  • Appoint an American envoy to be sure U.S. actions reflect the urgency of the crisis

Help the Save Darfur Coalition keep the story of Darfur in the news and on the minds of President Bush and members of Congress.

Click here now to make a tax-deductible contribution.

As always, your support is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

David Rubenstein

Dear ABP,

Later today the House of Representatives will vote on whether or not to provide critical funding for humanitarian aid in Darfur. In a country where a state-sponsored genocide has already claimed over 400,000 lives and left millions more homeless and starving, this funding could literally mean the difference between life and death.

Last month, the United Nations was forced to cut daily food rations in half - well below survival level - due to lack of funds.  We need your help today to make sure that this doesn’t happen again.

Please call your Representative today and ask that he or she vote for the Obey/Hyde/Lantos amendment which would add $50 million in humanitarian aid in Darfur.  We have provided a call script below for you to use.

Just one minute of your time could have a tremendous impact for the millions of innocent men, women, and children in Darfur who live every day in fear of murder, starvation, and rape.

You can find contact information for your Representative here, http://www.house.gov, or if you know who your Representative is you can simply call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected.  We have included a sample call script below.

Thank you once again for your commitment to helping the people of Darfur.

Sincerely,

David Rubenstein
Save Darfur Coalition

Dear ABP,

Thanks to your efforts and the efforts of many others working to create a lasting peace in Darfur, I am pleased to report we have seen significant progress in recent weeks.

On May 5, the Sudanese government and Darfur’s largest rebel faction signed the Darfur Peace Agreement, laying out a plan to end three years of violence and raising hopes for a lasting peace in Darfur. There is a much more to do, however, before that hope is realized.

In the next two weeks, the Sudanese government and the two remaining rebel factions must come to terms in order to ensure a strong building block for a lasting peace. With or without additional signers, it is imperative that the parties live up to their commitments to end the genocide and rebuild Darfur.

Another significant step forward was taken just yesterday, as the UN Security Council unanimously passed a resolution demanding strict observance of the peace agreement, and calling for a quick transition from the current African Union peacekeeping force to a stronger UN force. Prior to the signing of the peace agreement, Sudanese President Bashir opposed a UN peacekeeping force in Darfur by saying that there was no peace to keep. With this peace agreement, however, that argument has been rendered moot.

Soon there will be a joint UN-African Union assessment mission dispatched to Darfur to assess the situation. Following their return, the stage will be set for UN Security Council consideration of a second resolution to actually authorize the deployment of a UN peacekeeping force.

These are real, substantive steps forward, and you helped make them happen.

In fact, just one day after over 50,000 rallied on the National Mall in Washington, DC, and thousands more rallied at events across the country, President Bush dispatched Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick to the peace talks to make sure that an agreement was reached.

Upon his return, Deputy Secretary Zoellick personally called the Save Darfur Coalition to express his thanks for the level of U.S. activism which helped make the peace deal possible. In an interview last week, he said that “of all I've dealt with in foreign policy over some 20 years that I'm not sure I've ever seen as much broad support from churches, from communities and universities.”

Your collective voices have helped accomplish amazing results thus far!

But much more still remains to be done. Work at the UN is far from over, funding for humanitarian aid and peacekeeping falls short and puts millions of lives at risk. And above all, the people of Darfur still must contend with the dual threats of violence and starvation every day.

As we continue the fight, there will be many more opportunities for you take action and help make a difference.

Best regards,

David Rubenstein

Dear ABP,

I have some good news to report!  Earlier today, the Sudanese government and two of the main Darfur rebel factions signed a peace agreement to end three years of fighting that has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions from their homes.

This is only the first step toward ending the violence in Darfur and putting a stop to the tragic genocide.

You and others have sent over 800,000 Million Voices postcards to President Bush.  And just a day after over 50,000 rallied on the National Mall in Washington, and thousands joined rallies in cities across the country, President Bush dispatched Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick to the peace talks.

You helped make the issue of genocide in Darfur a top priority for the Bush Administration.

The momentum is building and we can make a difference!

Click here to tell your friends and family about our campaign.  And thank President Bush for his leadership so far - but let him know there is more work still to be done.

The peace agreement has been signed, but we must make sure that both sides live up to the terms.  The millions of men, women, and children who have been displaced or have had their lives rocked by violence will not know peace until the government and the rebels live up to theses agreed terms.

The Bush Administration must continue to play a leading role.

On a more personal note, I am incredibly grateful to the Save Darfur Coalition staff, our volunteers, member organizations and all of you for your incredible efforts over the past weeks and months.  Each of you helped us reach this historic point - but it is only the first step.

As we continue the fight, there will be many more opportunities for you take action and help make a difference.

Best regards,

David Rubenstein

Dear ABP,

By taking action right now, you can help turn a potential setback to the effort to stop the genocide in Darfur into an opportunity!

Yesterday, Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick - who personally helped negotiate a peace agreement between the Sudanese government and Darfur rebel groups - resigned.

Zoellick served as an advocate for Darfur within the Bush Administration.  With him now gone, we must keep the pressure on President Bush to act.  And since today is World Refugee Day - created by the UN in 2001 to recognize the millions of refugees and displaced people around the globe - there is no better opportunity.

Click here to send a message to President Bush.  Remind him on World Refugee Day to appoint a coordinator of US policy in Darfur and to push for creation of a UN peacekeeping force in Darfur.

Last month, Deputy Secretary Zoellick aided in brokering a peace agreement - an important first step.  Yet with hundreds of thousands in Darfur already dead, millions more displaced and many at risk every day, we must continue to press for a solution.

That is why we are asking President Bush to appoint a special US envoy to the region and to press for a UN peacekeeping force to be on the ground in Darfur no later than October.  We cannot wait any longer!

Join us in asking President Bush:

  • To push for a UN force for Darfur;
  • To strengthen African Union troops already in Darfur until the UN arrives;
  • To continue supporting humanitarian assistance programs in Darfur; and
  • To appoint a special envoy to coordinate US policy in the region.

Click here to email President Bush today.  Today is World Refugee Day today - a day set aside to remember the millions of refugees around the globe - and now is the time to remind President Bush of the plight of Darfur's 2.5 million refugees.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

David Rubenstein
